FINDING SUCCESS IN FAILURES

You’re going to fail. And you’re going to fail again.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

I’m sure you’ve heard all the motivational quotes, but how does that apply to real life and business life, especially in an age of “Instagram perfection”? How can you fail in a business setting and not make it fatal?

PR MANAGER, AMAZON (FORMER)

CHIEF MOBILITY OFFICER. (FORMER)

SETTING BOUNDARIES & AVOIDING BURNOUT

They were at the top of their careers. She was the lead PR Manager for Amazon in Michigan. He was the Chief Mobility Officer at the State of Michigan.

And they left it all.

To travel the world with their two young kids.

They’ll be joining us from Europe - 6 months into their worldwide travels - to talk about how they set boundaries and are now “working hard”…to avoid burnout!

TURNING YOUR INTERNSHIP INTO A FULL-TIME OFFER

Congratulations! You got the internship!

BUT…now how do you turn it into a full-time offer?

This session is purposefully scheduled for the first week of our programming - and still early in your internship tenure - so that you can take this conversation’s tips & tricks and apply them throughout the summer and turn your internship into an offer that you can’t resist!

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: insights into navigating a new role

It’s not always easy starting a new role or a new full time position at a company…especially when companies might still be remote or hybrid and you can’t just ask someone for advice at the water cooler!

So how can new hires hit the ground running? How do you manage the learning curve? And what should the expectation be on you, as a new hire, versus the organization managing the onboarding process?

We’ve asked our friends at OneMagnify to help us understand what you can and should expect as you start a new job or role - from the CEO, all the way to the new hire!

HOW TO DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Casual. Business Casual. Business Attire.

What’s all mean and what does it all ‘look like’?

Dress for the part you want. Dress for success. You’ve heard it all, but with so many definitions on dress codes and with some being in person vs. some being virtual, it’s important to know how to present yourself for all situations!

IN PERSON EVENT:

the power of feedback

“Feedback” can be a very scary and intimidating thing (especially in the business world) - but it can also be a very powerful tool that you can use to learn, grow, and improve.

Join us for a conversation with two amazing leaders who believe that feedback can be…and should be…something you lean into, rather than run from.

CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER

DETROIT AT WORK

PRIVATE SECTOR VS. PUBLIC

A lot of the companies that you probably see recruiting on campus are for-profit, big-name companies that certainly hold the allure of well-paying jobs and benefits. But have you ever really considered the differences between working for private versus public sector companies?

Do you actually know the differences?

Dana has years of experience on both sides of the coin.

She served as a leading manager at DTE Energy, but made the move to join the City of Detroit’s ‘Detroit at Work’ initiative. Join us as we dive deep into your questions about what both sides are really like; what they both have to offer; and why one option might seem more appealing at different stages of your career.

10 commandments of networking

Networking is a critical skill to master throughout your professional career. It’s also a skill that you can (and should) use every opportunity possible. You never know who you’re talking to and how that conversation can change the course of your career.

In this session, we’ll learn the top commandments of networking - then put them into practice with real time networking with our hosts, companies, and partners.

SOCIAL HOUR

There’s no agenda, just a good old fashion happy hour at one of the most FUN bars in Detroit. Located in the heart of the city at Campus Martius’ “sandbox” - come kick back, relax, and even put your toes in the sand as we meet up after work for a good time at BrisaBar!

MANAGER, HUMAN RESOURCE BUSINESS PARTNER

BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF MICHIGAN

HOW TO TALK TO HR (ARE THEY REALLY YOUR FRIEND?)

We’ve all heard the horror stories of ‘being called to HR’…kind of like being called to the Principal’s office…but does HR always have to have such a negative connotation? Can they actually be your friends? Can they actually be a support to you as you navigate the workplace? And how?

EVETTE GRIFFIE

VP, CUSTOMER & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

DTE ENERGY

THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDING STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS (WHICH STARTS NOW)

A common mistake of new graduates is thinking that they don’t have a network YET. But the reality is, you already have a vast network - and you’ll only continue to build on those relationships moving forward.

Look around…you could be sitting next to your future business partner, a life-long colleague, even a spouse.

So, start networking now…and never stop!

YOUR CAREER, YOUR WAY

No career path is linear.

Let me repeat that…No career path is linear.

As you learn to appreciate that, you’ll also learn to appreciate (and identify) the various opportunities that present themselves throughout your career.

Even a job that you don’t love will teach you something…maybe you learn the type of manager that you don’t want to be, maybe you gain a valuable skill that can be transferrable to a better suited job.

The opportunities are endless, you just have to be open to them!

Compensation, Benefits, and Retirement Planning

Although benefits can account for roughly 30% of your compensation, many of us don’t factor these costs in when deciding between career opportunities. Learn about life after college when it comes to comparing careers, compensation, and discovering the impact of benefits on your budget and future retirement plans.

INVESTMENTS 101: BEFORE YOU START INVESTING

The topic of investing has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Join DaVonte in learning some of the basics, including different ways to invest, considerations when deciding how you’re going to start investing, and a few key differences between investing in cryptocurrency and the market.
